Images, Video and Documents Can Be Added to Tips
Since 1999, Wood County’s Crime Stopper Program has assisted law enforcement in solving crimes. The program allows tipsters to remain anonymous and receive cash rewards for information. Before being upgraded in April, the former tip-taking software led to 367 arrests with the help of 2917 tips. Approximately $26,734 was paid out to tipsters.
“The program is beneficial because it provides useful information to law enforcement that assists in solving crimes that otherwise might go unsolved,” said Scott Drew, Deputy Sheriff for the Wood County Sheriff’s Department, and program coordinator. “It is also beneficial to the tipster, who may gain some much-needed cash for providing information that leads to an arrest.”
Wood County Crime Stoppers partnered with Anderson Software, which operates P3 Tips software. Previously, the program accepted tips via text submitted with a code and keyword. The new software allows tips to be submitted with the P3 Tips app available in Apple Store or Google Play, or through a browser.
“The vendor to our previous tip-taking software announced that they would be changing their software as of January 2018. They were unable to tell the consumers what changes would be made to the software, but had announced that they would be going away from text-a-tip as well,” explained Drew. “Many of the other Crime Stopper organizations throughout the state had already switched to the new P3 tips software and have been very happy with it.”
P3 Tips also removed the text-a-tip feature but allows users to download a secure app for free. Tips cannot be accessed without a proper access code, and users remain completely anonymous.
With the new software, tips no longer have length limitations and tipsters can upload images, videos, and documents. An encryption process obscures all identifying information. Besides the app, tips can be submitted from any PC or mobile browser at p3tips.com or through the Crime Stopper hotline at 877-325-STOP (7867), or by visiting woodcountycrimestoppers.com.
A tip ID and password is given to tipsters which allows them to login, submit follow-up information, have a real-time chat, be informed on the tip’s outcome, and receive award information.
