STRATFORD – The Stratford football team won its sixth game in a row, plowing past Auburndale 43-7 in a Marawood Conference game Friday night at Tiger Stadium.
Stratford is now 6-1 overall and remains perfect at 4-0 in the Marawood Conference. The Tigers stay in a first-place tie with Edgar. Edgar hosts Rib Lake and Stratford plays at Marathon next Friday, Oct. 5. Stratford hosts Edgar in the final regular season game on Oct. 12.
Auburndale falls to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the Marawood. The Apaches playoff hopes ride on next week’s game at home against Chequamegon. With a win, Auburndale would qualify for the WIAA playoffs with a .500 conference record, but are not guaranteed a spot. Auburndale finishes the regular season with a nonconference game at Whitehall on Oct. 12.
Auburndale scored first, on a 3-yard run by Trayton Weister in the first quarter, but that would be all the Apaches could muster against a stout Stratford defense.
Chase Flink tied the game with a 37-yard touchdown run and Stratford effectively put the game away in the second quarter scoring 24 points.
Jaykob Mickelson had a safety, and Okley Wrensch, Flink and Kade Ehrike caught TD passes to put the Tigers on top 31-7 at halftime.
Ehrike and Derek Marten had touchdown runs in the second half for Stratford.
Stratford outgained Auburndale 353-121 and forced three interceptions, two by Chandler Schmidt.
Ehrike finished with 125 yards rushing for the Tigers.
