The City of Pittsville dedicated their new plaque marking the geographic center of the state.
The plaque, located on the banks of the yellow river along Veedum St./County Road E, has marked the site of the exact geographical center of the state since the original plaque was placed in 1987.
Governor Walter J. Kohler Jr. was a frequent visitor to the Pittsville area in the 1950s, and in 1952 he proclaimed Pittsville to be the Center of the State. Land Surveyors established the spot on an island in the Yellow River about 250 feet from the marker.
The new plaque was constructed by students in Pittsville High School’s Manufacturing Class.
Mayor Dale Nichols thanked the people involved in the project.
The Mayor also gave a little background on the site. “That island over there has a unique history. In the early 1900s, there was actually a tavern there and I think how ironic it is that in the exact center of the state, you would find a tavern,” said Nichols. “The island also at one point served as a meeting place for the local Boy Scout troops.”
