15th Regional Win for Students from Marshfield High School
OnFocus – The Marshfield High School Ocean Bowl Team will be competing in finals of National Ocean Sciences Bowl for the fifteenth time. They have taken the title four times and were runners-up the past two years.
[Recently, the MHS Science Bowl Team won their regional competition and are heading to Washington D.C at the end of April.]
Five students from Marshfield High School will compete against other top high school scholars in the 21st annual National Finals Competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) next Thursday, April 19 to Sunday, April 22. The Marshfield High School team won the Lake Sturgeon Bowl Regional and joins 22 other regional winners (out of more than 350 competing teams) at Finals at the University of Colorado Boulder (hosted by the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Environmental Sciences (CIRES)). This is the fifteenth time students from Marshfield High School have competed in the NOSB Finals.
The Marshfield High School team consists of: Suhaas Bhat (jr), Carter Chojnacki (jr), Nikita Gonugunta (jr), Muhammad Abidi (jr), and David Gui (sr).
“We as a team are extremely excited to be attending Nationals and representing our region. This competition has expanded our understanding and appreciation for the oceans and the global environment, and we hope to spread this appreciation to our fellow students through this competition,” said Muhammad Abidi
“The great thing about Ocean Bowl, and oceanography as a whole, is its ability to integrate all the sciences into one field, seamlessly using physics, chemistry, biology and earth science to understand the whole world around us,” said Suhaas Bhat (team captain).
Students will test their knowledge of ocean-related topics, which include cross-disciplines of biology, chemistry, policy, physics, and geology by answering buzzer-style, multiple choice questions, and longer, critical thinking-based team challenge questions. They will also participate in the Science Expert Briefing, a mock congressional hearing where they present science recommendations on a piece of legislation, enhancing their critical thinking skills and building a better understanding of the broader context of science.
The NOSB, the signature education program of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership, is building the next generation of ocean-literate citizens and scientists, educating them on timely topics that will remain relevant for years to come. The Finals theme this year is Our Ocean Shaping Weather.
