New Cupcake Store Donates Treats to Fire & Rescue Personnel

On Saturday, April 22, Marshfield Fire and Rescue Department visited new bakery Cupcakes on 8th to pick up some delicious treats and show co-owner John and his friends some of their lifesaving equipment.

Opened in March 2017, Cupcakes on 8th is owned and operated by Patricia Truel and her son, John.

“My son, John, is 12 years-old and he has down syndrome,” said Patricia. “This store is to help teach him life skills: learning how to count, calculate money, customer service. Even when you have a bad day, you have to be nice to people, so it’s all about life skills.”

Members of the Marshfield Fire & Rescue crew enjoyed meeting John and his friends.

“The fire department came to pick up some cupcakes today that we donated to them,” said Patricia. “Jon [Lucareli] from the Fire Department decided to bring the big fire engine and an ambulance and let all the kiddos come and check it out and see the functions of the vehicle and meet the fire crew.”

“Visiting John, his mom and their friends was a real silver lining on our day,” said firefighter/paramedic Jeni Sadauskas. “The boys were so excited and curious. The biggest part that stood out for me was that they had the best manners! Introducing themselves with a handshake and asking everyone’s name, offering a hand to help me in and out of the rigs, and thanking us repeatedly. We all left there with full hearts and genuine smiles. Not to mention, the cupcakes were out-of-this-world delicious!”

The video of the visit was shared on social media and reached thousands of people by Monday morning. Even the box supplier for the little store, located in Iowa, reached out to express her delight.

“Our little packaging company where we design, manufacture, and ship our boxes, exists to serve bakers who want smaller orders of premium packaging at wholesale prices,” said Ann Hill, owner of BRP Box Shop. “Because we are small, we get to enjoy a sense of personal pride in the things we are making for the customers we love. When people use our packaging in an inspiring way, it leaves us smiling for days and reminds us how unbelievably lucky we are to get to serve such an incredible group of people.”

Though a local store, Cupcakes on 8th is truly making an impact nationwide. In just the last week, John and Patricia have been featured on The Today Show and PopSugar.
