Marshfield Clinic to host free vein screening day on Feb. 14

OnFocus – Do you have bulging or discolored veins in your legs, just below the surface of the skin? They may be varicose or spider veins, which can be painful, uncomfortable or perhaps you simply don’t like the way they look.

The good news? Treatments are available. The first step is a screening, which is why Marshfield Clinic, 1000 N. Oak, Ave., Marshfield, on Feb. 14 will host a Vein Screening Day.

Up to 48 people, ages 25 and older, can be accommodated for vein screenings between 8 a.m. and noon in the Clinic’s Vascular Laboratory Department.

The screening will consist of an abbreviated vein-screening test. The free screening will take about 15 minutes and uses simple, non-invasive ultrasound techniques. Appointments are necessary. To make an appointment call 715-387-5554 or 800-782-8581 ext. 7-5554. Walk-in appointments are not accepted.

While rarely considered a serious health concern, varicose and spider veins can cause a variety of medical problems. These include aching, throbbing, swelling, sores or rashes, bleeding, thickening of the skin, and enough discomfort to interfere with your daily activities. The veins can become ulcerous, which is a condition for which you should always seek prompt treatment.

Some ways to reduce the risk of getting varicose and spider veins is the following:

Exercise and stay active.
Avoid standing or sitting for long periods of time.
Maintain a healthy weight; do not be overweight.

Some treatment options for varicose and spider veins include injections, laser and vein removal.

“By participating in the Vein Screening Day, people can quickly learn if they would benefit from office treatments, which can rid them of painful and unsightly varicose veins,” said Dr. Douglas Wirthlin, a Marshfield Clinic vascular surgeon.
