Simplicity Credit Union Wins MACCI Award

Since 1955, the Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MACCI) has been honoring business by recognizing a Firm of the Year. Announced last night at MACCI’s Annual Dinner, Simplicity Credit Union is the 2018 Firm of the Year.

“This award is important because MACCI believes it’s important to recognize, promote and honor major employers in the Marshfield area for their economic and community impact along with showcasing their excellence in operations,” said MACCI Executive Director Scott Larson. “By showcasing these employers, the community learns more about the history and operations of the employer; as well as, how valuable the employer is to the vitality of the area, both in terms of economic impact and support of community organizations and initiatives.”

Through the years, a selection team has reviewed nominations submitted for consideration based on the following criteria:

  • Current MACCI member for at least the last five years.
  • Economic impact
  • Number of employees
  • Other significant impact
  • Service to community
  • Enhancement of community impact and enrichment of community life
  • In business in Marshfield area for 10 years or at the consideration of the Committee
  • Past honorees may be eligible if they have gone through a corporate restructuring and/or experienced a significant economic impact

Founded in 1949 in the basement of St. John’s Church, Simplicity Credit Union’s first vault was a shoe box filled with $322.25 from its first 13 members and used to help make small loans to families in need. In 1951, the original St. John’s Credit Union became Central Catholic Credit Union to serve a larger membership.

Then, in 1977, they found a cooperative partner and together changed their name to Central City Credit Union to serve an even larger field of membership.

Though it has changed names, expanded, and relocated through the years, Simplicity’s dedication to its members has always been at the forefront of their mission.

Simplicity now serves more than 24,000 members and has assets topping $225 million.

As a business model structured around seven principles deeply rooted in democracy, economic participation, and sustainable growth of both the business and the community in which it serves, cooperatives are owned by and operated for the benefit of the people at the heart of each organization, not outside investors.

Those who join Simplicity Credit Union become a member-owner of their local financial cooperative, and benefit from an equal voice and lower fees and loan rates. Simplicity’s values include cooperation, leadership, integrity, creativity, and dependability.
