Greenwood Coaches Optimistic Despite Team Inexperience

With a low number of players on the current roster, Greenwood football head coach, Chris Schmitz, is keeping an open mind about the team’s potential for the upcoming season.

Schmitz expects about 20 players to be on the roster this Fall. “We’ve got a younger group of kids that like to play, but lack depth,” Schmitz said. “We’re going to be starting, probably, six or seven sophomores.”

Schmitz noted that he’s not sure what to expect of the team because of the inexperience of its players. He does expect Cole Zimbauer and Bryce Walde to be the leaders of the team.

“They are the ones that put in the most time and are the most dedicated to the program,” Schmitz said.

Senior Cole Zimbauer echoed his coaches concerns about the number of players on the Greenwood football team, but still has high expectations for the program. “I think we can be competitive in the conference,” Zimbauer said. “Our goal is to make the playoffs.”

Zimbauer expects all three seniors, including himself, and two juniors to be leaders of the team this season.

Greenwood volleyball head coach is looking for the team to finish in the top half of the conference this season, but acknowledges the youth on the squad.

“We’re gonna be probably pretty young and inexperienced for the most part, but I think I just want to see them grow,” Jennifer Mayenschein said. “We really only have two coming back with some experience on varsity.”

Brooke Hinker

One of those players that is returning is senior Brooke Hinker. “She is one of my two solid starters that is coming back,” Mayenschein said. Mayenschein is looking to fill the setter and outside positions during Fall camp.

Senior Brooke Hinker heads into her final season with the team and is looking for some of the younger players to help fill open positions and display some quality play. “I’m hoping to see underclassmen come up and try their best and try to make the varsity potential,” she  said.

After playing in the middle in the past, Hinker would like to start in the back row this season and become a leader of the team. Greenwood volleyball opens its season at home on Monday, Aug. 20, against the Osseo-Fairchild Thunder.
