Chaps Score Nine Runs to Abbotsford’s One
By Malachi David – The Marshfield Chaparrals played a makeup game on Monday at Jack Hackman Field against the Abbotsford Merchants.
The Chaps used a strong start by Ryan Metz and some early offense to win the game 9-1.
The Chaps didn’t waste any time getting on the board as they scored five runs in the first inning.
Justin Rayburn was the first to get on base with a single. Curtis Engelbrecht was then walked. Sam Schwanebeck hit a deep sacrifice fly that would score Rayburn. Luke Wirtz then hit a triple that went all the way to the wall, allowing Engelbrecht to score. Lucius Messerschmidt drove in Wirtz with a single. Alex Steines reached first on an error by the Merchants before Jack Donahue was walked. With the bases loaded, Noah Panzer hit a single into the outfield to Messerschmidt and Steines.
The Chaps added another run in the second behind Engelbrecht’s solo home run to left center field. This put the Chaps up 6-0.
Messerschmidt kicked off the third inning with another single and was eventually driven in by a single from Donahue. This gave the Chaps a 7-0 lead after three innings.
The Chaps wouldn’t score until the eighth inning again. However, during that time Ryan Metz was putting on a show on the mound.
Metz ended up pitching seven scoreless innings for the Chaps. He finished with seven strikeouts, two walks, and only one hit allowed. That only hit cam with two outs in the seventh, breaking up his no-hitter.
The scoring in the eighth came via a double by Schwanebeck that would score Bobby Pilz and Rayburn.
