Banners Raise Funds for American Legion, Main Street Marshfield

Sixty new banners, each featuring a veteran, currently adorn downtown Marshfield’s Central Avenue, thanks to a project spearheaded by Paul Rogers. Inspired by a similar banner project he witnessed in Cape Coral, Florida, Rogers brought the idea back to Marshfield with a few modifications.

Each banner features a different veteran, with each one having a connection to Marshfield.

“I thought it was a great way to honor our veterans and it made that city look so patriotic,” said Rogers of his experience in Florida. “The big thing I learned was that’s what they use to fund their military museum down there. I know from long experience that both the Legion and Main Street Marshfield struggle for funding. So we reworked it all for Marshfield. Right now, you wouldn’t believe how many calls I’ve received. It’s beyond comprehension.”

Gary Cummings and Michael Feirer, both American Legion members and volunteers, are two of the featured individuals.

“As I think about the Honor Walk, I am very honored and at the same time humbled to be sponsored by a long time friend, Paul Rogers,” said Cummings. “As I walked Main Street looking at those Vets who served, I think of the sacrifices so many of our local Veterans have made over the many wars/conflicts the United States has been involved in. As the saying goes ‘All Gave Some and Some Gave All’.”

“I think just to be within the group, is really unique,” said Feirer.

The two men have also have served (and Feirer continues to serve) as a City of Marshfield Alderman. Appropriately, their banners hang across the street from City Hall.

“I was honored to be the 7th District Councilperson for three terms from 2010 through 2016, when I chose not to run for reelection,” said Cummings. “With my banner hanging across the street from City Hall it reminds me of my service to the community where I was able to help those citizens in my district. I met many good people during my term including fellow council members, City staff and citizens of Marshfield.”

All three men encourage residents and visitors to take time to explore the downtown banners and reflect on the names and faces of those featured.

“Every morning when I drive to coffee, I go by the banners and I see people that gave their lives,” said Rogers. “As we approach Memorial Day especially, it’s important to remember them.”

“I encourage people to take in the Banner Walk and to see the many Veterans who served our country from our community,” added Cummings. “I was made aware of the Veterans who were awarded the Purple Heart as well as many of my friends and High School classmates on the Banners.”

A special ceremony to dedicate the banners, as well as the Legion’s new patio, will take place at the American Legion Post 54 (on Maple Ave) this Wednesday, May 23, beginning at 5:00pm. There will also be a check presentation to the Legion and Main Street Marshfield organization, from funds raised from the banners.

Everyone is also encouraged to attend the Memorial Day Parade on Monday.
