Ammonia Leak at Abbyland Foods

Shortly before 8:00 PM an ammonia leak was reported at Abbyland Foods in Abbotsford, WI. Abbotsford-Colby Police Department and Marathon County Sheriff’s Office alerted the community through social media, that there has been a chemical spill at Abbyland Foods located at 502 E Linden Street, Abbotsford. All residents within 1 mile were advised that they should evacuate immediately to the ShopKo parking lot located at 1100 E. Spruce Street, Abbotsford.

According the the Department of Labor Occupation Safety and Health Administration, ammonia is considered a high health hazard because it is corrosive to the skin, eyes, and lungs.  Ammonia is also flammable at concentrations of approximately 15 to 28% by volume in air. When mixed with lubricating oils, its flammable concentration range is increased. It can explode if released in an enclosed space with a source of ignition present, or if a vessel containing anhydrous ammonia is exposed to fire.

At 8:28 PM CST an additional update was given by the Abbotsford-Colby Police Department, that the leak has been isolated. According to the update, if you are having any difficulty in breathing or dizziness you should call 911.

This is a developing story.
